Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
